CrossFit Announces Three New Sanctional Events for 2020 Games
The first event will be the CrossFit Open, which is a competition open to all athletes from any discipline. The second event is the CrossFit Games, which are competitions held at different locations around the world. There are two types of events: Open and Regional.
Each type has its own rules and scoring system. For example, the Open has no weight classes. All competitors compete with their own personal bests. The regional events have specific rules and scoring systems. They usually have one or more weight classes, but they may not include age limits like the Open does.
In addition to these sanctioned events there are other competitions that occur outside of the official CrossFit Games program such as local contests and team challenges (which are similar to the individual competitions). These events are run independently of the official CrossFit Games program.
There are many reasons why a competitor might want to participate in a sanctioned event. Some do it because they want to qualify for the Open, some do it just out of curiosity, and others still do it simply because they enjoy competing against other people. But regardless of motivation, all athletes must abide by the same rules and regulations when participating in sanctioned events.
There are many benefits for athletes that follow the rules. For example, the sanctioned events provide a level of consistency among events and competitors. The rules allow everyone to compete on an equal playing field.
This gives newcomers a better chance of winning against more experienced and conditioned athletes. Also, having defined rules can help prevent cheating.
The CrossFit Games provide a level of community involvement that is not found in any other sport. Every year, the CrossFit community gathers to watch their local heroes compete against the best of the best during the live finals. It is like a little community of people cheering on their friends and family members as they chase their athletic dreams.
The community also provides an outlet for people who may not place in the top ranks but still love to compete. There are many examples of such athletes. For example, at the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games, there were 26 National Geographic Explorers competing in an event specifically designed for them.
Yes, they were all competing for prizes and some even qualified for the Games, but at their core they were really there to experience and learn about new cultures and places around the world.
The rules help protect these athletes as well. The community wouldn’t stand for an athlete to cut through a restricted area in order to save time while competing in a sanctioned competition. This helps keep our Explorers safe while they venture to unexplored places on our globe.
Finally, following the rules makes life easier for everyone involved. The sanctioning process allows for a high level of consistency among events, which helps to prevent confusion among athletes, coaches, and spectators. The rules also help ensure that the athletes are competing on a level playing field, which is good for everyone.
Rules can make competitive sports too rigid and take away some of the fun. CrossFit has rules to protect athletes and the community. The rulebook exists to keep people safe, make competition fair, and preserve the sanctity of the sport.
Unified Rules of Fitness
All events at the CrossFit Games are conducted within the rules provided here. These rules are general in nature and all situations not specifically addressed herein will be resolved by the CrossFit Games staff.
Athletes will be informed of any changes before the start of scheduled events. All decisions by CrossFit Games staff are final.
CrossFit is a constantly varied workout performed at high intensity. While the program itself may be simple to understand, its elite nature requires that the rules be fairly flexible.
The following are guidelines for administering the rules:
1. Athletes will be judged on performance only within the prescribed guidelines.
2. The intent of the workout specification is final.

3. A penalty of deduction of time or number of repetitions will be assessed where a violation of the rules occurs.
4. Some penalties are designated as such for the sake of competition fairness only.
The penalty is at the discretion of the judge and may not be applied in all cases. Penalties are not listed in any specific order, but rather grouped by their designation.
Measuring tape judges and spotters are allowed. All other forms of coaching are forbidden. If a judge is helping an athlete, that judge can no longer judge nor compete themselves.
The following are guidelines for performing as a judge:
1. Judges may serve only if approved by the Games Director or their designee.
In CrossFit, every decision, even who is selected to judge, has to be made based on performance.
2. Judges must prepare in advance and are not allowed to make up the rules as they go.
3. Judges can only judge one event at a time.
No official may serve as judge and competitor in the same event. If a judge is competing, they cannot judge any other athletes at that competition, but may still watch and cheer like any other spectator.
4. Judges are encouraged to cheer their athletes as they compete and can be present on the competition floor at all times.
Furthermore, each judge is required to submit a written report following the conclusion of each event. This report should detail what was done right and what was done wrong by the athlete. This is not so much to “slap them down” but rather to give them constructive criticism so they may improve themselves for future competitions and see what it takes to become a winner.
