Name: James Hobart (Hobie)

Height/Weight: 6’2″ / 210 lbs. (standing), 5’10” / 180 lbs. (seated)

Marital Status: Married to Amanda Hobart since April 25, 2013. They have one child together named Wyatt Hobart.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Texas Tech University, 2011. Master’s degree in Sports Management from Texas A&M University, 2014.

Occupation: Formerly a professional bodybuilder, but later decided to pursue other interests such as fitness and weightlifting.

Favorite Activities: Weight lifting, running, yoga, hiking and camping.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy working with my team members to achieve our goals. My favorite part of my job is helping others reach their potential!

The Team: Hobie and Mallette are two of the strongest men on the team. They are both former bodybuilders and they have been training together for over a year now. They have formed a bond and work very well together.

They are originally from California but have spent most of their lives in Texas.

Hobbies and Interests: Hobie is a huge fan of fishing and hunting. He loves spending time with his family and friends, whether it’s on the lake or at home watching TV. He is married to Amanda (whom he met in high school) and has one son named Wyatt.

Hobie is currently working on a degree in kinesiology.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, food: Hobie’s favorite movie is Braveheart. He enjoys all kinds of movies, but his favorites are ones that have some sort of action packed scene in it.

His favorite book is The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway. His favorite musician is Kid Rock and he enjoys all kinds of music. His favorite food is crawfish.

Personality: Hobie is a very dedicated person, whether it’s to his job, his friends or his family. He loves to spend time with them whenever he gets the chance. He enjoys hanging out at home, going fishing, or watching a movie on the couch.

If you ever needed help with something, he would be one of the first people you would go to.

Challenges: Hobie have had to overcome many physical challenges in his life. He was born with a congenital heart defect and had to undergo open heart surgery when he was only two years old. After the surgery, he had several other operations to repair his heart problem until he was 13 years old.

He also has scoliosis, which forced him to wear a back brace from ages 13-18. Because of this, he suffered from severe depression during those years. This led him to develop an eating disorder and a severe drug addiction. Fortunately, he was able to overcome these things.

Hobbies and Interests: Hobie loves to spend time with his family. He enjoys playing with his son and going on trips with his wife. He also likes going to church and reading the bible.

He is currently working on finishing his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Texas Tech University and hopes to one day become a physical therapist.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, food: Hobie’s favorite movie is “Gladiator.” His favorite book is the Bible. His favorite musician is Rich Mullins and he enjoys all kinds of music.

His favorite food is his mom’s famous chili.

Originally from Washington state, she now lives in League City, Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology. She plans on going back to school to get her masters degree and eventually her doctorate.

While there, she was a four year letter winner in Pole Vault and also competed in the heptathlon. While there, she broke the school record in the high jump, long jump, javelin throw, and the 400 meter relay. She was also part of two Texas 5A State Championship Teams.

She is currently working on finishing her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. She hopes to one day become a Physical Therapist.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, food: Her favorite book is “Heaven is for Real” by Todd Burpo. Her favorite movie is “The Blind Side.” Her favorite musician is Toby Mac and she enjoys all kinds of music.

Her favorite food is sushi.

Her personality is that of a leader. She has overcome many obstacles in her life and is always encouraging and supportive of her teammates.

She first learned how to pole vault during her first year at Texas Tech. She quickly became skilled at the sport and earned a spot on the NCAA Division 1 Track and Field Team. After her first year at Texas Tech, she transferred to University of Alabama where she continued to compete in the pole vault.

Hobbies and Interests: She loves to spend time with her family. She also likes to read, go for walks and explore new places.

At a young age, she began to display signs of gymnastic talent. Her parents enrolled her in classes at a local sport’s academy and by the time she was 6 years old she had become very good. She spent countless hours training and going to various competitions.

In high school, she continued to compete in gymnastics. During her sophomore year, she suffered a knee injury that kept her from competing for several months. The mental stress of not being able to compete caused her to lose focus in school. She ended up moving in with her aunt and spent the rest of her high school years there. She was still able to graduate but gymnastics was no longer part of her life.

When she turned 18 years old, she moved back in with her parents and decided to enroll at Texas Tech University. During her first year, she began to feel the itch to get back into gymnastics. She saw a flyer posted on campus for a track club that was looking for new members.

She gave it a try and instantly fell in love with it all over again.

As a pole vaulter, she sets goals for herself and then works hard in order to achieve them. Her major goal right now is to become an All-American and she is well on her way to doing so. She also provides mentoring for younger pole vaulters that are coming up through the ranks.

Why did you want to be a part of Project Phoenix?

: She wants to be a part of something bigger than herself and by giving back to society she can do just that.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

: She would like to gain more knowledge about how military members live, what it’s like and how she can support them.

How have you prepared yourself for this challenge?

(Training, etc.): She trains regularly with the pole vault and her coach has helped her develop a plan for her to succeed.

What do you think you will personally struggle with the most: She thinks she may struggle with interacting with people that aren’t used to interacting with the public. For example, If she goes out to dinner with her team, she may have a hard time interacting with the server because she will feel compelled to be nice to them.

What do you think you will personally have the easiest time with?

She thinks she will adapt easily with physical training.

What types of emotions do you think you will go through?

She feels like the hardest part for her will be the first couple of days in which she gets to know everyone. After that, she won’t have as many emotions as she gets to know everyone better. She thinks the easiest part will be physically adapting because she is in good shape already.

What are you most worried about?

Public speaking

Do you think you can handle this challenge? Yes Why or why not?

Because she knows that anything is possible as long as you set your mind to it and work hard to achieve your goal. SHE CAN DO IT!

What are you looking forward to the most?

Seeing the country and also accomplishing her goals.

How do you think you will handle being away from your family?

It will be hard for her but she will stay in contact with them as much as possible.

How do you think they feel about you doing this?

Her parents are very supportive and know that this is something she really wants to do.

What is your backup plan?

If she isn’t happy then she will go back home and figure out something else to do. Social & Communication Skills: She is very outgoing and her passion for gymnastics has helped her make friends. She is very good at talking to people and understands that it is important in communicating with others.

Physical Fitness: She has been doing gymnastics since she was six years old. She is in peak physical condition and is very flexible. She is very strong for a girl her size and loves to work out and do weight training.

She can run very fast and has great balance which will definitely help her.

She plans on taking the following items with her on the trip: a backpack, sleeping bag, a tent, hiking boots, a compass, binoculars, a laptop and an mp3 player.

What are you going to bring with you?

She plans on packing light because she won’t need much and would rather travel as lightly as possible. She will be in good shape because she runs every day, is very flexible and loves to work out. Finally, she is very excited about this trip and can’t wait to get started!

What is the first challenge you want to do?
