Elite Fitness Equipment (EFY) manufactures exercise equipment for people that want to get in better shape but don’t have a lot of time to do so. EFY sells its products through health clubs, sporting goods stores, and online. EFY’s major competitors are Anytime Fitness, Life Fitness, and Nautilus (among others).
1. EXERCISE TYPES AND DEMOGRAPHICS
A common problem with exercise equipment is that it is often designed for one specific type of exercise, such as running, instead of being a general piece of equipment that can be used for multiple types of exercises. At Elite Fitness, we design fitness equipment that can be used for several different types of exercises and are not limited to a specific range of motion or formula. We have identified the two main types of people that will be interested in our equipment:
a. The first type of person is someone who is very busy and does not have a lot of time to exercise. This type of person may also get bored from doing the same types of exercises all the time. a. *DIRECT SALES: Advantages: We keep more of the profits and don’t have to share with a middleman. Also, we will be able to get feedback from customers about what types of equipment they would like to see. b. *SPECIALTY RETAILERS: Advantages: It will be easier to get our equipment into stores since there is less of a commitment on the part of the retailer. c. *MARKETING TO HSN: Advantages: Since we will only be marketing to one channel, it will be easier to manage demand. HSN provides free advertising through its television network. Disadvantages: We will have to share a larger portion of the profits with HSN.
Also, it is harder to get products into HSN since there is a lot of competition and they are very selective.

Our income statement targets will be based on the number of elliptical trainers we expect to sell in a year and at what price. Our cost per unit is $650. Our desired income statement target will be calculated as:

The price of our product will depend on the sales channel we choose to go with. We will assume that through direct sales, we can get a price of $595. Through specialty retailers, we can get a price of $750. Through HSN, we will get a price of $900.
