Predicting 15.2—Week 2 of the CrossFit Games Open
The first week of the CrossFit Games Open is over and it was a great start! There were some upsets and surprises but overall it was a good week for us all. Let’s take a look at what happened in Week 1:
Gretchen Lohmann (L) defeated Katie Mackey (R) by TKO in Round 3.
(L) defeated (R) by TKO in Round 3. Amanda Jones defeated Kelly Wallick by Submission in Round 5.
defeated by Submission in Round 5. Jessica Kish defeated Sarah Williams by KO/TKD in Round 7.
Defeat of Jessica Kish was a big surprise since she had been the favorite throughout the whole competition so far and she lost to a girl from her own gym! Amanda Jones is another one of our favorites because she beat a top female competitor in Gretchen Lohmann. She also defeated a woman who was ranked #1 in the world by beating Kelly Wallick.
In general, women are doing better than men so far this year. In fact, there have been several times when we thought that women would not do well at all during the Open, but they actually did very well! This could be due to the fact that there are a lot more women competing than there are men this year, but either way it’s good to see female CROSSFITters kicking butt!
Let’s also not forget about teenage girl, Sam Briggs who is currently ranked 3rd in the World! I hope to see more of her during the year ahead!
As for the men, we’ve got a long way to go before we catch up with the ladies. In fact, the men will need a miracle if they want any chance of winning the year long competition. One man who gave a valiant effort this week was Sammm Bright Ward.
He battled through an injured shoulder to defeat 2 other Goliaths and then ultimately lose by Decision in Round 8 to Mattie Rogers. I really thought he would finish in the top 20 this week since he had an awesome performance but his point total wasn’t high enough to crack the top 20. Regardless, he’s one tough SOB and we’re proud of him!
In any case, there are a lot more events this year for our Men and Women to prove themselves in so we’re looking forward to seeing what happens next. After this week we’ve got 7 more weeks left in the competition and anything can happen.
This Week’s Theme is “Tight Spaces”
This week’s workout theme is “Tight Spaces” and will test your ability to workout in a live-time situation where a mistake can cost you everything. This one is going to require a lot of focus so make sure that you don’t eat anything too messy at least 2 hours before you go into the game. Also, you’ll want to wear loose clothing since you will be making a lot of contorted movements in this game.

In any case, here’s this week’s workout:
