The world record was set by British athlete Sam Briggs at the 2013 European Championships in Kiel, Germany. His time of 5:00.02 was 0.01 seconds faster than the previous mark of 5:00.03 set by England’s Michael Atherton in 2008.

The new world record is 4 minutes, 44 seconds faster than the old one!

Briggs’ time is the second fastest ever recorded in international competition. He broke the previous record held by American Mark Rowland (5:04.05) back in 2010. It took him just four years to break the existing world record, which had stood since 2007.

The current world record was previously held by Britain’s David Millar (4:55.72).

In an interview with the BBC, Briggs stated that he decided to compete in the event after watching other athletes attempt it. “I wanted to see if I could do it,” he said. “It wasn’t really planned.”

He added that he was surprised when his time came up on a computer screen. “I didn’t expect anything like this,” he said. “I just wanted to do it. It was unreal.”

Briggs wasn’t the only athlete to set a new mark at the competition. New Zealander Olivia Loe broke Heather Stanning’s record in the women’s event with a time of 6:04.66.

For both British rowers, the event was a different type of competition from their usual races. They said that they had to do back-to-back races without much recovery in between.

The men’s and women’s pairs raced at the same time in Kiel, with the men’s pair going second. In the men’s competition, Norway’s Olaf Jensen and Are Strandli posted a time of 5:03.00.

As beautiful as the world record sounds, it isn’t likely to stand for long. The British team is training hard for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where they plan to defend their gold medals from London.

Other British rowers have also been setting new records recently. Last year, Britain’s Alan Campbell set a new world best time in a 2000-meter single sculls race with a time of 5:16.34. Although the distance is different, the time is faster than the previous world record.
